Social Media can provide children with many advantages and opportunities for successful interaction and communication in their online world. Social media can offer social support and strengthen friendships and relationships, help children keep in touch with family and learn from others.  Social Media is the way the children of today are connected to their outside world.

Parents can be proactive in guiding their child’s social media use in a supportive way.  Doing this will encourage positive online communication and reduce the possibility of experiencing the many possible pitfalls that can come with Social Media like Cyber Bullying, Trolling, Grooming, Problematic Internet Use, and Sexting.

As a parent it’s important to become familiar with your child’s online activity. Know the Gaming and Social Media sites they are using and take time to read their terms and conditions.

Some basic tips for your child to stay safe while Gaming:

  • If another player is making you uncomfortable by bad behaviour, block them
  • Report bad behaviour to the game site or social site you are on
  • Never share personal details
  • Always communicate with respectful online
  • Know game classifications and age restrictions of sites
